
There was joy and celebration in the City of Mutare as various pieces of equipment were commissioned and the newly constructed Chikanga Phase 2 Primary School was officially opened on Friday 8 August 2025. The commissioning was conducted by Honourable D. Garwe, Minister of Local Government and Public Works, who was represented by the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Eng. B. Kabikira.
In his speech, Minister Garwe thanked the City of Mutare Councillors, management, stakeholders, and residents for working together to ensure that resources are channelled towards development. He also commended the City of Mutare for leveraging the Central Government’s partnerships to acquire state-of-the-art equipment. The minister further encouraged other local authorities to emulate the City of Mutare by being transparent in the use of resources for development.
The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Advocate Misheck Mugadza, applauded the City of Mutare for prioritizing service delivery in its acquisitions. “From the City of Mutare, we are witnessing a transformation in the way public service delivery is approached. The acquisition of this plant and equipment will greatly enhance the city’s operational capacity in terms of service delivery. I am sure these essential service delivery tools will touch the daily lives of every resident and lay a foundation for a clean, safe, and sustainable urban environment,” said Minister Mugadza.
His Worship, the Mayor, Councillor S. Chabuka, thanked various stakeholders for these remarkable achievements. He indicated that the procurement of such equipment showed Council’s commitment to maintaining efficient and effective service delivery.
The Town Clerk, Mr. K.B. Chafesuka, thanked the parent Ministry and Central Government for their support in ensuring that the City of Mutare continues to succeed in its various service delivery initiatives. He also thanked City of Mutare stakeholders, partners, and contractors for playing a vital role in ensuring that the local authority meets its service delivery obligations. He indicated that he was happy to be part of a team that was delivering a school every two years, and Chikanga Phase 2 Primary School will go a long way in alleviating the city’s educational needs. Chikanga Phase 2 Primary School is City of Mutare’s seventh school and will begin to operate as a satellite school under Chikanga Primary School.
The pieces of equipment that were commissioned included three tipper trucks, a multi-purpose motorised fire ladder, a water bowser, a refuse compactor, academy buses, a 26-seater bus and a 56-seater bus, a Toyota Land Cruiser donated by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, and a skip truck.
